Driver Says Falling Rock Hit His Car On Route 28

HARMAR TWP (KDKA) ― A local man says he feels lucky to be alive after a large rock struck his car as he drove through the construction area along Route 28 this morning.

Steve Hartshorn told KDKA he was heading to work on Route 28 South through the Harmar rock zone when a large rock slammed into the hood of his car – less than a foot from his windshield.

The incident happened shortly after 6am near the RIDC Park Exit in the area where crews have been working to stabilize the hillside.

Though he was obviously stunned by what happened, Hartshorn continued on to his job at RIDC Park and called police.

PennDOT says they'll investigate the incident after they've had a chance to look at the official report; but a spokesman told KDKA this morning that no contractors were working at the time and they don't know why the rock would have fallen onto the highway.
