The Pittsburgh Steelers got some bad news on Saturday as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not play against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
The Steelers say Dennis Dixon will be the starting quarterback, while Tyler Palko will serve as his backup and Roethlisberger will be third in line.
According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Roethlisberger started to complain of headaches after practice on Wednesday and Thursday and began having reservations about playing.
According to the Steelers officials, the team promoted second-year quarterback Palko to their active roster and released seventh-year wide receiver Shaun McDonald on Saturday.
Palko, a Pittsburgh-area native, was signed to the Steelers practice squad earlier this week. He played for the Pitt Panthers while in college and graduated from West Allegheny High School.
On Friday, an unnamed league source reportedly said Roethlisberger met with Coach Mike Tomlin and told him that he might sit out the game as a precaution.
But Roethlisberger told local media on Thursday that he planned on playing.
"The doctors have all taken about a thousand tests, and passed them all with flying colors; so, that's the good news," he said.
