PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― As far as the eye could see, in a room that's supposed to hold more than 2,000 people, the morning session at the Convention Center for Rivers Casino employee hopefuls was packed.

It was so packed that there was standing room only at the question and answer session.

It was designed to allow potential job candidates the chance to get an idea what kinds of jobs are available.

It was not a formal interview session.

At a time when steady jobs are at a premium, people like Quentin Washington of McKeesport jumped at the chance to be there.

"I wanted to work for a casino, " said Washington. "I've been running my own lawn care service now for about two years and trying to make a way. - nice benefits - I can't do benefits for myself so this is a great opportunity."

Christina Colalillo of Moon Township is a recent Pitt graduate.

"Well I just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday and I'm just out looking for anything - anything that involves working with people. I've had a lot of great internships so I'm looking for my first professional position," she said.

Many of them had their resumes although the company encourages online applications.

There are already more than 28,000 applications online for the 1,073 jobs available.

"Applying online is the best most effective way both in terms of the Rivers Casino and in terms of the candidate," said Rivers casino President Ed Fasulo. "Because it assures the candidate they are in fact getting catalogued, documented and part of the process."

Fasulo says the jobs range in pay from $8 to $30 per hour, depending on skill and experience level.

The casino is expected to open August 5 on Pittsburgh's North Shore.
