It may have been seven degrees below zero on Friday morning, but that didn't stop iron workers from putting in place the last piece of concrete to complete the 10-story garage adjacent to Pittsburgh's new Rivers Casino -- and, of course, a Terrible Towel flew below the American flag to mark the occasion.
"Today's another milestone in a series of milestones for our project," said Ed Fasulo, general manager of the Rivers Casino.
Milestones -- and setbacks, too -- as the casino project ground to a halt over financing issues that were finally resolved when Chicago billionaire Neil Blum bought out Don Barden's majority interest.
But it's all good news now.
"The tree signifies that this has been an accident free site. We just had an OSHA inspection last week. There were no violations. This has been an accident free, injury free job site," Fasulo noted.
Project manager Ed Fasulo said the casino -- now expected to open next August -- is a few weeks behind schedule -- as the casino building is not yet closed up -- but 400 workers are already inside working.
"The interior work is progressing," says Fasulo.
And Keating Construction superintendent Jack Cooney credited local workers for great progress.
"It's phenomenal to see the amount of work that's been put in place in time. We're averaging $20 million worth of work a month in place here, and that's quite a lot of work."
Casino officials expect the topping off the casino to take place in February.
The next big milestone is the delivery of slot machines on May 1st.
Then, if all continues on schedule, the doors will open when it's a whole lot warmer during the first half of August.
