Jury Selection Underway In Regola Case

GREENSBURG (KDKA/AP) ― Jury selection has begun in Westmoreland County for the trial of a state senator charged with perjury and not properly storing a handgun that wound up in the hands of a 14-year-old neighbor who shot himself.

KDKA's Alison Morris reports one juror has been selected so far.

Senator Robert Regola III allegedly let his teenage son possess the gun and did not store it safely.

Potential jurors are being asked whether they know anything about the highly publicized case and whether any of them supported Regola or his political opponents.

Regola's attorneys wanted an out-of-county jury to hear the case, but Westmoreland County Judge John Blahovec refused to order one unless attorneys struggled to find enough unbiased jurors locally.

Fourteen-year-old Louis Farrell was found dead two years ago July 22nd in the woods near his home, which was next to Regola's.
