Governor Ed Rendell was back in Pittsburgh today handing out state redevelopment dollars that he said would create thousands of new jobs in the region.
Rendell credits our region's ongoing revitalization and building program for keeping our unemployment rate below both the state and national average. Today the governor handed out more checks that he says will help keep or create some 6700 jobs.
With Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl cheering him on, Governor Rendell doled out $27 million for a dozen projects across Allegheny County.
The projects range from $4 million for a parking garage in the bakery square project in Larimer to $2 million restoring the Garden Theater area in the central North Side. Also included was $1.5 million for the new August Wilson African-American Cultural Center and another $1 million to make improvements at Heinz Hall.
"These projects, the projects we're giving money today, will create over 2,000 construction jobs and nearly a thousand permanent jobs when up and running," the governor told KDKA.
The governor said these dollars from the state's Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program generate hundreds of millions in private investment. "People are always asking me, well, is the state giving corporate welfare? Well, we'll spend $37 million anytime to get $476 million in private investment."
The governor says he has pumpedĀ up to $1.8 billion into Allegheny County alone during his term.
By acting proactively, Rendell says Pennsylvania has not been hit as hard by the recession as other states.
