A pedestrian bridge on the Carnegie Mellon University campus was named for inspirational professor Randy Pausch.
The 230-foot bridge spans a hollow and connects the new Gates Center for Computer Science and the Purnell Center for the Arts on the campus.
"We decided to take his book, 'The Last Lecture' and we have taken metaphors out of 'The Last Lecture' and translated them into light," Chris Popowich, a co-designer of the bridge, said.
"This is just one of the many examples of I still have magic in my life," Jai Pausch, Randy's widow, said. "I don't have Randy but a lot of that magic is still with us."
Future students who cross the bridge will come to learn what it symbolizes.
"Randy, when he created the 'Building Virtual Worlds' class, was looking for a way to bring artists and engineers together with the idea of, 'Don't give up, believe in yourself, have a dream and go for it,'" Pausch said. "What a wonderful message to hear."
Pausch's book is now being given to every first and second-year student. His computer program, Alice, is also being continued.
In July 2008, Pausch died at age 47 from pancreatic cancer in his home in Chesapeake, Va.
