Quecreek Mine Rescue Marks 7th Anniversary

SOMERSET COUNTY (KDKA) ― Plans were unveiled for a Visitor Center as the anniversary of the Quecreek Mine rescue was marked today in Somerset County.

It was seven years ago when nine miners were trapped and eventually rescued from the Quecreek Mine.

Today, a series of events, including a remembrance service, were held to mark the dramatic rescue that received international attention.

Officials say there are plans to build an Education and Visitor Center on the rescue site.

Joseph Sbaffoni, who organized the rescue effort seven years ago, says he will never forget it.

"Pretty humbling and pretty exciting moment when we found out that all nine were alive, in pretty good shape," said Sbaffoni, of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. "We knew we still had to get them out of the mine, but at that point there was no question in my mind that we would bring nine miners back to their families."

Thousands of visitors stop at the rescue site every year.

Organizers say they are hoping to raise more than a million dollars to complete a visitor center there.
