A Wilkinsburg woman who's accused of killing a pregnant teenager and cutting the baby from her womb will have to wait for her day in court as the victim is laid to rest.
Yesterday a judge ruled that Andrea Curry-Demus is mentally competent to understand the charges she's facing.
Though Curry-Demus was scheduled to face a preliminary hearing for the murder of Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport, today, the hearing has been postponed due to funeral services for Johnson.
Investigators found Johnson's body inside Curry-Demus' Wilkinsburg apartment last Friday. Her hands and feet had been bound with duct-tape and officials say she had a wound to her abdomen consistent with the removal of a baby.
Shortly after Johnson was reported missing, officials say Curry-Demus showed up at a Pittsburgh hospital with a baby that she claimed was her own. Suspicious hospital workers contacted police.
At a competency hearing yesterday, a psychiatrist from the Allegheny County Behavioral Clinic testified that Curry-Demus was "psychotically ill and very paranoid."
Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning, however, ruled that Curry-Demus understood the charges against her.
Funeral services will be held in McKeesport for Kia Johnson at Trinity Church of God in Christ .
Johnson's infant son was released from the hospital on Wednesday.
