Port Authority To Unveil Service Overhaul Proposal

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Port Authority is unveiling plans to overhaul transit service in the area.

The ideas would cut a few routes but also add some bus and light rail services.

The service's first large-scale draft in decades will include easier routes, easier schedules, less stops and faster buses plus the development of a county-wide development of transit centers.

Three concepts will be unveiled by a consultant later today.

The hope is for a system more convenient and cost-effective, and the consultants preferred concepts called better radial and better radial plus will continue giving riders direct service from Downtown to Oakland.

Some of the proposed changes include:

  • Cutting the number of routes with more service on the remaining routes.
  • Direct service would be added to Pittsburgh International Airport.
  • Thirteen transit centers around the county with climate-controlled waiting areas.
  • The number of stops would decrease significantly from 16,000.

The public will be invited to attend open houses in June about these changes Downtown and in Oakland.
