Pittsburgh Zoo Welcomes 1 Millionth Visitor

A Penn Hills elementary school student made history this morning when he became the millionth visitor at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium!

One local boy was a very special guest to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium this morning.
The young boy, Gregory Hoolahan, from Penn Hills, a fifth grader at Forbes Elementary, became the zoo's one millionth visitor this morning. And he was just about speechless when he learned he was the lucky visitor.
"It's just great," Hoolahan told KDKA. "It's just a great feeling."
The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is having a great year with the opening of the new Water's Edge Exhibit.
Zoo officials say the new attraction led to the zoo having more visitors than ever.
This is the first time in the zoo's 109 year history that they have welcomed 1,000,000 visitors in a year. The one millionth visitor walked through the gates just before 10 a.m.
"It's record-breaking, it's the first time the zoo has ever made a million visitors so we're extremely excited about it," said Dr. Barbara Baker, of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. "A lot of hard work and energy and effort, and we really want to thank all million visitors who came out this year."
The zoo says they will reward the one millionth visitor with some great prizes.
The winner receives a lifetime zoo membership, a behind-the-scenes tour and other prizes.
Reaching 1,000,000 visitors will now help the Pittsburgh Zoo obtain its goal to be regarded as one of the top 10 zoos in the country.
