Pittsburgh Marathon Could Resume Next Year

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Marathon is likely coming back.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato says he's pretty confident the race will return next year after a five year absence.

The Pittsburgh Marathon began in 1985.

At one point it was considered one of the country's five top marathons, drawing in 4,000 runners at its peak.

But five years ago, the city said it could no longer afford the extra police protection and other services needed.

City and county officials had originally hoped to resurrect the marathon for this year's 250th anniversary celebration.
