City Expands Crackdown On Fire Code Violations

Inspectors surveyed properties in nine different sections of Oakland today, finding problems with 4 apartment houses in North Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Expanding its crackdown on building and fire code violations that began in Oakland, city inspectors issued 140 citations today -- ranging from problems with fire escapes to rotted porch roofs

During a sweep of Oakland properties, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced that inspectors will visit the California-Kirkbride area of the North Side, Lincoln-Larimer, as well as the Allentown-Beltzhoover area next week.

Inspectors surveyed properties in nine different sections of Oakland today and found problems with four apartment houses in North Oakland.

According to the mayor's office, inspectors issued 140 citations today, including: 4 involving problems with fire escapes, 2 for issues with porch railings, 2 for obstructed exits and 1 for a rotted porch roof.

In May, two apartment buildings on McKee Place were shut down because of fire code violations. On Monday, one of those buildings was allowed to re-open after the owner made the necessary improvements.

Pitt Chancellor Mark Nordenberg and the mayor walked through Oakland this morning with city inspectors, examining fire escapes, windows and steps.

The sweeps in Oakland began in 2006 after two students died in apartment fires.
