Maintenance Work Begins On 3 City Bridges

Crews will be working on the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson Bridges for the next two weeks

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Routine maintenance work on three bridges connecting the city of Pittsburgh with the North Shore is now underway and it could cause some traffic delays.

Over the next two weeks, Allegheny County Public Works crews will be working on the sidewalks of the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson Bridges, also known as the 6th, 7th and 9th Street Bridges.

"There's been some deterioration over the years and we're just addressing that deterioration at this time," Steve Shanley with Allegheny County's Department of Public Works told KDKA.

Crews are bolting plates onto the sidewalks to reinforce them.

As a result, single lane closures will be in effect from 9am until 3pm.

Even though crews will only be working on one bridge at a time, some commuters are already worried about the potential traffic tie-ups.

"The only way to get over to the North Side conveniently is these bridges," commuter Bobby Franklin added. "There's traffic in general every day – just from everyday commuters, so if they shut down the bridges, it's only going to cause more congestion."

Though the current work is only expected to last about two weeks, Shanley says crews will be doing more extensive work in the near future, "replacing the decks, repainting the structures, probably replacing the sidewalks."
