A Perry North woman is on life support after she was shot the day before Thanksgiving and the person accused of shooting her is behind bars.
The Sheriff's department arrested 18-year-old Jayquan Massey while he was visiting his attorney. He was planning to turn himself in. A warrant was issued for his arrest last week.
Investigators say he was firing shots at a passing vehicle near the corner of Perrysville Avenue and Bonvue Street, but hit 47-year-old Cheryl Wilds instead.
The bullet struck Wilds in the neck and severed an artery.
The victim's 14-year-old son was standing next to the shooter. He watched in horror as the shots rang out and according to police reports, the boy screamed, "You just shot my mom!"
This isn't the first tragedy in the Wilds family. Wilds' mother and her boyfriend were stabbed to death after an intruder broke into her home in 1992.
The case remains unsolved.
Meantime, the victim's family says they're not ready to speak publicly.
Massey is being charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
