PennDOT Suspends Road Work For Holiday Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The summer may be winding down but construction season is still in full swing on the roads.

Some major projects are still underway.

But PennDOT's spokesman Jim Struzzi says, "There will be no roadwork on major construction projects for the Labor Day weekend as a concession to drivers who are going to events."

However, officials say those projects kick back into high gear after the holiday and that means more weekend closures on the Parkway East. As well as a bridge rehab project that will close the Brinton Road overpass, right outside of Foli's restaurant.

Meanwhile, just down the road, a few of overpasses have been closed for about a month. PennDOT says they wanted to get them back open this weekend, but now that is not going to happen.

"Well, those are the ramps from the Wilkinsburg to the outbound Parkway East," said Struzzi. "Essentially, we lifted the ramps over Route 30 to improve clearance, but we found additional work that needed to be completed so rather than wait until later we decided to do it now while we have it closed."

Officials also say that work on the Parkway North is moving along. Crews shifted traffic from the HOV lanes back to the main lanes. But those lanes won't reopen until the northbound lanes are rebuilt, which is scheduled for sometime this fall.

Another big project has new bridge beams going into place next weekend at the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge in Oakland.

But the biggest headaches are saved for the Parkway West, where multiple lane closures at Banksville, Green Tree, and Route 60 could test drivers' patience.

"There has been renewed focus on bridges in Pennsylvania, and a lot of this work has to be done, especially the expansion dam work that's being done," said Struzzi.
