Police Crack Down On Pedestrian Safety In Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― In recent months, the state Department of Transportation and police agencies in Oakland have taken a particularly hard-line approach to traffic scofflaws.

The problem, officials claim, is that drivers and pedestrians still aren't paying attention.

"We haven't seen a downward trend in the crashes yet is the reason we're out here," said PennDOT safety press officer David Pritt.

Pritt is referring to this morning's safety sting in Oakland -- targeting Fifth and Forbes Avenues.

"We're trying to bring together some safety issues. Might have to write some citations," said city police Sgt. George DeVault.

"There's a lot you have to do from the time you take your drivers' test... The education has to be out there what the rules of the road are."

While police were looking for drivers who disobeyed crosswalks and traffic signals, within the first hour, several pedestrians were warned for similar infractions.

"Pedestrians are no more right than what the drivers are. I mean, everybody has to watch out for everybody on the road, and they have to look out for their self-interest," said Pritt.

The crackdown is part of a series of statewide safety initiatives.
