Police Crackdown In I-79 Construction Zones

(KDKA) The I-79 roadway in Allegheny County has become a giant construction zone.

With several projects simultaneously underway, signs and billboards are up warning drivers to slow down.

But with many of them ignoring the warnings, state police are now blanketing the road from Marshall Township to Neville Island.

"We've had an increase in the number of accidents on the I-79 corridor," said State Police Cpl. Kevin Brown. "That's why we're out here. We're trying to give some visibility, step up our enforcement to avoid some of the crashes out here."

"Ninety percent of the people who come into a work zone during a crash and get hurt are not the worker," added David Pritt PennDOT safety officer. "It's the driver or someone who wrecks. So we're looking out for our people, but also for the general public as well."

Police say there is also a decrease in the number of drivers turning their headlights on in work zones. That carries a $25 fine.
