One Killed In Route 8 Crash

PENN TWP. (KDKA) ― An afternoon accident on Route 8 in Butler County killed a man and sent several others to the hospital.

Multiple cars were involved but police say they still aren't sure why it happened.

In all, seven people were involved in the fatal crash on Route 8 between Airport and Renfrew Roads in Penn Township around 3:30 p.m.

It was a violent chain reaction involving four cars across four lanes of traffic.

"One vehicle crossed to the center lane of the roadway, impacted one of the vehicles that were traveling in the opposite direction," said Officer Jack D. Ripper of the Penn Township Police Department. "It put that vehicle into the other lane of traffic, which impacted another vehicle. So it was a collision that occurred in all four lanes. There was multiple collisions between multiple vehicles."

The accident killed a 24 year-old man, from Penn Twp., and left five others with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police continue to try and figure out exactly what caused the initial crash.

They believe speed was most likely a contributing factor.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Route 8 was closed for more than three hours.
