Skoula Scores Twice As Pens Hold Off Thrashers 3-2

Pittsburgh Penguins Blog

ATLANTA (KDKA/AP) ― The Penguins ended their four-game losing skid on the road in Atlanta Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over the Thrashers.

Veteran defenseman Martin Skoula scored twice for the injury-plagued Pens, who started the season 7-0 on the road, as they held off the Thrashers in the third period.

Skoula gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead at 7:38 of the first period when he beat goalie Johan Hedberg, a former Penguin, with a long shot from blue line on the power play.

It was Skoula's second goal of the season. Sidney Crosby, the Pens' leading scorer with 10 goals and 12 assists, assisted on the goal.

Skoula then made it 2-0 at 7:34 of the second with another long blast that easily beat Hedberg to the short side.

Evgeni Malkin added his seventh goal four minutes later for a 3-0 Penguins lead.

Also in the second period, Max Talbot was awarded a penalty shot with 2:26 left, but missed the net on his attempt.

Pens' goalie Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 31 of 33 shots making great saves on Maxim Afinogenov and Thrashers superstar Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Thrashers' Chris Thorburn made the game 3-1 when he scored a short-handed goal 9:40 into the third period.

And with their net empty, Afinogenov pulled the Thrashers to within one goal of tying it up with just 18 seconds left in the game.

But the Pens were able to hold on for the victory and are now 8-4 on the road.

The Penguins are now headed to Florida for a 7:30 p.m. game Monday against the Panthers.
