Angry Drivers Sit In Parkway East Traffic Jam

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Lane closures created one giant traffic jam and angered lots of drivers on Saturday along the Parkway East.

Traffic was backed up most of the day, all the way from downtown Pittsburgh to Monroeville.

In some cases, motorists sat in the mess for more than three hours.

"I just traveled from St. Louis and we missed my niece's wedding," said one driver. "It started 45 minutes ago, we've been on this road for three hours."

On Friday night, PennDOT crews reduced three lanes to just one between Bates Street and Monroeville for pavement work.

Officials with PennDOT said they tried to warn drivers about the closures.

"We tried to warn people. In the press release this week, I put in there, expect extensive delays – because - same thing last year when we had to narrow down traffic in the city limits - you had extensive back-ups like you're having today," said Jim Struzzi, a PennDOT spokesperson. "Unfortunately, everyone doesn't get the message."

PennDOT says they will reopen the lanes after the Steelers game Sunday afternoon, but until then those people at the Pitt game at Heinz Field could also find delays on their way home.
