Area Under Another Ozone Action Day

Local officials open local senior centers for those looking to beat the heat and stay safe

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Another Code Orange Ozone Action Day is in effect for our area today as the heat and humidity climb.

The Department of Environmental Protection says fine particulate matter mixed in with the heat and humidity could make it difficult for some to breathe.

Experts say the elderly, young children and those with respiratory trouble should be extra careful today.

Here are some tips to help keep pollution levels low:
  • Ride the bus or carpool
  • Avoid burning leaves, trash & other material
  • Wash dishes & clothes in full loads
  • Save energy – don't overcool your home

Meanwhile, local officials say they are opening up local senior centers over the next few days for anyone age 60 and older who are looking to beat the heat.

The centers are:
  • South Side "Market House" Senior Center on 12th Street & Bingham (Open July 17 & 18 till 7 p.m.)
  • Homewood Senior Center on Frankstown Road (Open July 17 & 18 till 7 p.m.)
