Onorato Proposes To Cut Drink Tax In 2009

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― The controversial drink tax in Allegheny County could be changing.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato has proposed to cut the tax from 10 percent to 7 percent.

If the measure passes, it would take go into effect in January of 2009.

County officials say since the drink and car rental tax began this year, they are on pace to surpass the $32 million needed to fund mass transit by perhaps $10 million.

The extra money raised will be used to invest in the county's infrastructure.

Onorato says it would be fiscally irresponsible to reduce the drink tax immediately which is why it would start at the beginning of next year.
