Center For Alcoholics Opposed To Strip Club

WEST END (KDKA) ― The Onala Club on the West End held an open house Monday to protest and discuss concerns of a proposed strip club that would be built no less than 85 feet from their a facility for recovering alcoholics at 1635 West Carson Street.

"These are people trying to get their lives together, trying to stop drinking and drugging. It would be a problem for this people coming down here to run right into that," Joe Panzino, executive director of the Onala Club, said.

However, Patrick Risha, the proposed owner of the strip club, assured the community at meeting last week as well as the planning commission that this will be an upscale operation.

"We'd like to present our views to the planning commission hearing on the 18th of November. And then if necessary, we'll go to City Council with it," Panzino said.

Not only do West End residents not want the adult entertainment club in their neighborhood, surrounding communities, like Mt. Washington, are now coming out to voice their opposition.

"We have 15 board members and 5 officers and have taken the position that we're going to be totally opposed to this. It's the club and the after effects of the club," said Frank Valenta, vice president of the Washington Community Development Corp. "It's the element that participates in this kind of entertainment."

Both sides will attend the planning commission's hearing now scheduled for November 18th.
