Coroner Identifies Ohiopyle Drowning Victim

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Fayette County coroner has identified the man who drowned at Ohiopyle yesterday as George Wilhoft, 20, of Washington.

Wilhoft was swimming in the Youghiogheny River with four friends yesterday afternoon when he was swept over the 18-foot falls.

Park Manager John Hallas told KDKA that Wilhoft and his friends floated down to the main falls and made contact with the buoy line directly above the falls; but he apparently lost his grip.

"The victim was holding the buoy line more center-channeled than the rest – they were closer to shore - they were able to pull themselves to shore," he said. "The victim, however, lost his grip on the line and flushed over the main falls," he said.

Though a kayaker managed to get Wilhoft out of the river, he was later pronounced dead at Uniontown Hospital.
