Students In Oakland Forced Out Of 'Unsafe' Housing

OAKLAND (KDKA) ― College students in Oakland were told to pack their things and go after city building code inspectors said their housing was unsafe.

Officials went to two apartment buildings at 331 and 337 McKee Street. Tenants went there and found signs posted inside and outside the building telling them to leave.

The city says owners of the buildings were notified about violations in those buildings in 2006 but they never responded.

The tenants were told they have until Monday to move out of their apartments and were referred to Student Service and the Red Cross to make other arrangements.

The management company for 337 McKee Street tells KDKA the building owner is out of the country and they were somewhat surprised that the tenants had to leave.

They say they believe they're working with the city and they believe they're doing everything they can to comply with the city's regulations and they're waiting to hear from the city to find out what needs to be done so their tenants can stay.

There was no answer at the number listed for the other property owner.
