Truck Accident Leads to Road Closure, Phone Outage

NORTH VERSAILLES (KDKA) ― A truck driver could be cited after an accident that knocked down phone lines in North Versailles this afternoon.

At the time of the mishap, the truck was turning onto Route 48 from a parking lot and drove over a curb.

Hours later, some places are still without phone service.

Police said an unknown number of homeowners were affected by the outage.

Verizon and Duquesne Light crews were at the scene all evening, assessing the damage, and figuring out the best way to make at least temporary repairs which could get them through the night.

The problem forced the Winchester House restaurant to close early.

"We weren't able to run any credit cards through with our customers and, as you know, now, everyone uses credit cards," said Toni Zyma of the Winchester House. "It's a touchy situation when you ask them just to write their numbers down, and leave them with us, so we car run them through later this evening."

North Versailles Township Police expect Route 48 to be open to traffic in the morning.

That's important because buses use the highway to get to East Allegheny High School.
