North Shore Connector Project Delayed

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
There has been a setback for the Port Authority's North Shore Connector project.
Plans to test the machine that will bore twin tunnels beneath the Allegheny River are on hold.
Instead, officials will be checking the drill's cutting face, but keep the drill in place.
Then, the drill will be shut down through the holidays.
The hope is to get that test run finished next month before starting the boring process, at about 20 to 30 feet per day.
The news isn't so good on the other side of the river either.
Originally, Stanwix Street was to be closed through the end of the month.
But now, the Port Authority says delays in stabilizing parts of the street to support a 50-foot deep drill pit are pushing its re-opening back another one to two months.
The Port Authority is not talking about the effect the delay might have on the more than $400 million price tag.
The connector is supposed to open by 2012.
