Defense Begins Case In Cheerleader's Murder Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The defense began its case today in the trial of a young man accused in the death of his ex-girlfriend back in August of 2007.

John Mullarkey is on trial in the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Gateway High School cheerleader, Demi Cuccia.

The prosecution rested its case Thursday morning.

In court today, a pathologist showed autopsy photos of Cuccia's stab wounds.

Meanwhile, Dr. Daniel Wagner testified on behalf of the defense about the affects that the acne medication, Accutane, can have when users who quit cold turkey.

"I think some of the statements that the defendant made, that I read about, made me believe more that this cold turkey thing could have been a bigger factor in this case," said Dr. Wagner.

The prosecution is expected to present their own rebuttal expert to offset the defense experts.

The case will then go to the jury.
