Mount Pleasant Armory Prepares For Thanksgiving
MOUNT PLEASANT (KDKA) ―
Thirty-four turkeys, 150 pounds of potatoes and 30 dozen deviled eggs are just part of the Thanksgiving dinner being prepared at the Mount Pleasant Armory.
For 19 years, retirees and current soldiers with the 1st Battalion 110th Infantry Regiment have been delivering free meals to the elderly and needy in the area.
"We have a few people who will dine with us inside the facility here but most of our meals - about 220 of our meals will be delivered to Mount Pleasant, Scottdale and to Connellsville," said Lieutenant Colonel Ross Gammon. "Mostly some of the elderly people in the area who don't have a lot of family in the area."
Volunteers started preparing the meal around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The Lieutenant Colonel says he'll be on-duty overnight, making sure the turkeys are fresh and there aren't any fires.
The 1st Batallion has been feeding the elderly every Thanksgiving, even in times of war. This year, 100 soldiers are already packed up and preparing to go to Afghanistan in January. But they realize the importance of keeping these meals going each year.
"A lot of [the elderly] have been doing it for years with us so I think if we missed it they would be hurting this year," Lt. Col Gammon said.
Meals will be delivered tomorrow from 11am-1pm. Thanksgiving Dinner will also be served at the Mount Pleasant Armory at noon. The Armory is located at
2239 School Street in Mount Pleasant.
