Patrols Increased After St. Clair Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh Police tonight have increased patrols in the St. Clair Village area after someone fired three or four shots into a moving, unmarked school van.

The van was from the Academy, a school in Baldwin for juvenile offenders.

The 33-year old driver of the van drove the vehicle a few blocks, into a Mt. Oliver neighborhood, after the shots rang out from a hillside, near Cresswell, and Mountain Streets.

Otis Mickens, whose 16-year old son got off the van moments before it was fired on, said, 'I'm afraid for my son right now, I don't want him to ride that anymore."

Mickens thinks the van may have been targeted because it carries different teenagers from different neighborhoods.

A 17-year-old male student who was in the van waiting to be brought home was wounded in the shoulder, the driver sustained a grazing wound.

Bullet holes were clearly visible in the windshield of the van, the passenger's side door, and the passenger's side window was shot out.

The van came to a stop at the corner of Margaret Street, and Hays Avenue, where police and paramedics found it.

Joe Woods, who has lived on Margaret Street, in Mt. Oliver for more than 45 years, says he's ready to move, because he's had enough of neighborhood crime.

Back in 2005, Academy vans were shot at twice in Pittsburgh - in one incident, there were no injuries, in the other, the driver was hurt by flying glass.
