Pittsburgh Ranked 'Most Livable' City

Pittsburgh's Awards & Recognition

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh has reclaimed the top spot in a new ranking of the nation's most livable cities.

The 25th anniversary edition of "The Places Rated Almanac" will put our town on top for the first time since we shocked the world with that ranking in 1985.

No doubt this latest ranking will be a shot in the arm for civic pride once again.

"It's the triumph of the better than average place," said David Savageau, the publisher of the Places Rated Almanac. "It's not spectacular but it is very good in all of the areas."

This is the first time a city has repeated in the number one spot.

Editors looked at factors such as housing, transportation, jobs, education, climate, crime, health care, recreation and ambience.

"There are people moving into Pittsburgh," said Savageau. "This is something that might be lost to a lot of people there. They're taken with their physical setting and the fact that it's a low cost of living area."

Other cities in this year's top ten include San Francisco, Seattle, Boston and Philadelphia.

Since the publication of the 1985 almanac, Pittsburgh has dropped as low as 14th in 1997 and 12th in 1999, the last year that the listings were done.

Pittsburgh is also the only city to finish in the top 20 every time.
