HAZMAT Situation Forces Evacuations In Monroeville

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) ― Officials say 25 homes in the Alpine Village neighborhood in Monroeville have been evacuated.

The evacuation was ordered because of an apparent HAZMAT situation.

Officials believe between 500 to 600 gallons of gasoline somehow got into the ground.

The fire chief says tanks at a Sunoco station were being filled.  It's possible it is a case of the tanks overflowing instead of a leak.

There's no indication the gas seeped into the water supply or sewage system, although the fuel has gone into a local creek.

Officials have opened the Monroeville Senior Center for people who have been evacuated.

We're told electricity has been cut off to evacuated homes as a precaution.

Stay with KDKA for more details.
