Families Evacuated After Monongahela Chlorine Leak

MONONGAHELA (KDKA) ― More than a dozen families are back in their homes tonight after they were forced to evacuate around 5 p.m. because of a chlorine leak.

The evacuations occurred in the East Railroad Street area of Monongahela, after a machine knocked a valve head off a 150 pound tank, according to Monongahela Fire Chief Frank Hnatik.

The incident occurred in the Riverside Scrap Metal Yard, of the Metal Management Company.

Cheryl Runyan, who lives on Sarah Street, said after police first told her to go back in her house, there was a knock at her door a short time later, and a policeman told her she had to leave.

Washington County Emergency Management officials say everything returned to normal soon after 7 p.m.

No one was hurt in the incident.
