PBS To Cut Back On Airings Of Mr. Rogers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― There will soon be less "make-believe" on TV.

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" episodes have not been produced since 2001, but the show has been rerun every weekday on member stations of PBS.

Starting in the fall, just one episode a week will be provided by PBS to those stations to air, instead of the daily episodes that children have grown to enjoy everyday.

This decision is being made because the show is no longer in production since Fred Rogers passed away in 2003, and also because the menu of programming continues to expand.

Pittsburgh's PBS station, WQED, says it will continue to broadcast the show five days a week even after PBS cuts back on the national feed.

There is a very close relationship between the WQED and Family Communications Inc., the Pittsburgh corporation that Fred Rogers founded to produce his popular series.

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" recently celebrated 40 years of national broadcasts this past February.
