WQED Offers Tours Of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ―
One day after the unveiling of a towering sculpture of Fred Rogers in Riverfront Park on the North Shore, a studio at WQED-TV was dedicated to the Pittsburgh icon.
David Newell, in the guise of "Mr. McFeely," cut the ribbon as guests entered the newly named Fred Rogers Studio.
"Here's the Eiffel Tower, and here's King Friday's castle," Newell says, gesturing toward beloved sets that have been re-assembled one more time. "Pieces we were using when we were taping 'Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.'"
The neighborhood has been re-constructed in the former Studio A for this weekend only. Saturday and Sunday, visitors are invited to see it for themselves.
"It's not really supposed to be a realistic set," Newell says. "It's really something to use your imagination with, to be in the world of make-believe where anything can happen. So it's the suggestion of a neighborhood that Fred wanted."
After this weekend, the studio will be cleared. But this neighborhood of the imagination will endure.
"We went to make sure that the next generation knows how much Fred respected children and childhood," says the man known to millions as Mr. McFeely.
Visitors are welcome to see the neighborhood Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at WQED studios on Fifth Avenue in Oakland.
