Soldier From Apollo Killed In Afghanistan

APOLLO (KDKA) ― An Armstrong County man, who was serving in Afghanistan, has been killed.

Family members say they found out on Friday that 23-year-old Michael Girdano, of Apollo, was killed Thursday.

Family and friends tell KDKA's Paul Martino that Girdano had only been in Afghanistan for one month and was killed in what is believed to be a bombing attack.

"Fantastic guy, one that everyone needs to meet in their lives," Girdano's friend, Adam Ross, told KDKA.

Girdano was a 2003 graduate of Apollo Ridge High School and went on to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

"That was his goal; he wanted to make West Point," said Ross. "All of us were committing to colleges and it took him a little bit of time, but when he got that letter we all shed some tears. It was a dream come true for him."

So far, the Department of Defense has not confirmed Girdano's death.

But friends have been leaving condolence messages on Girdano's MySpace page.

He is survived by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Stay with KDKA for much more on this developing story.
