Mayor: Zappala Right On McDonald's Drug Crackdown

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Allegheny County District Attorney could close three downtown Pittsburgh McDonald's restaurants after the manager of one location was arrested for selling drugs inside the store.

Police arrested 48-year-old John Eckard, of Bethel Park, who managed the Smithfield Street McDonald's.

He's accused of selling prescription drugs to a police informant in the store.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala wants McDonald's officials to help police curb drug activity inside and near the stores.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Police Chief Nate Harper agree saying Zappala is right to take a hard line with McDonald's on drug enforcement.

Zappala says he wants an agreement with McDonald's by tomorrow or he will go to court.

He is "confident" an agreement can be reached

A McDonald's spokesman says the chain is cooperating with police.
