Substitute Teacher In Butler County Facing Charges

BUTLER (KDKA) ― A substitute teacher accused of sending inappropriate text messages to a 12-year-old boy is now facing more serious charges.

Authorities say Matthew Goettler, 24, is being charged with at least four sex crime felonies against children including rape of a child.

Police say Goettler is a Butler Area substitute elementary school teacher and a Moniteau Area District assistant 9th grade basketball coach.

According to investigators, Goettler is accused of playing an inappropriate game that involved acts officials have described as graphic and sexual in nature.

Authorities say the investigation began when improper text messages were reported to them by the mother of one of the teens.

"We had a mother call us who had spoken to her son about going over to Mr. Goettler's home," said Cpl. Cheryl Polena, of state police. "He had been text messaging back and forth. She read some of the text messages. They sort of concerned her so she brought them in for us to look at, and the investigation evolved from there."

Goettler has been released from the Butler County Jail on $10 000.
