Greene Co. Victim's Family: Justice Was Served

WAYNESBURG (KDKA) ― After one hour of deliberations, a jury sentenced a man convicted of raping and strangling to death a 12-year-old girl in Greene County to death.

Jeffrey Martin, 50, was found guilty of the 2006 murder of Gabrielle Bechen. Her body found buried along with her ATV on a horse farm five days after she disappeared.

Investigators say Bechen threatened to tell her parents that Martin molested her.

"We know that Gabby's looking down and smiling because justice was served today," Shannon Presock, the victim's cousin told reporters.

"This is not something we look to do but justice was served for Gabby and we don't take any joy in having a death sentence imposed but this is the law and this is the appropriate sentence for the crime that was committed," Greene County District Attorney Marjorie Fox said.

"Yes I think he is sorry about the circumstance. Maybe the jurors decided he ... what their version of facts were and I respect their decision," Defense Attorney Harry Cancelmi said.
