Meeting Addresses Marcellus Shale Drilling
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
With dozens of homeowners in the Pittsburgh's city limits signing over mineral rights to a drilling company, their neighbors are concerned about the possibility of drilling.
Pittsburgh City Councilman Patrick Dowd, D-Highland Park, organized a town hall meeting with experts and the community in Lawrenceville.
About 60 properties in Dowd's district have oil and gas lease agreements filed with the Allegheny County Recorder of Deeds Office.
The panel of experts addressed safety issues if and when Marcellus Shale drilling happens in city limits.
"We need to make sure that we have ordinances in place, that our public safety officials are well-prepared, but we as a city if this does in fact come, that we know how to guarantee health, safety and well-being," Dowd said.
Chesapeake Energy, a company that has agreements with property owners in Lincoln Place, had a representative at the meeting.
"My company was the one leasing here a year ago," Dave Spigelmyer, vice president of Chesapeake Energy, said. "We currently have no plans in the city of Pittsburgh and do not expect to materialize here in the center city of Pittsburgh drilling in the near future."
But residents don't buy it and know that leases are the first step toward drilling.
"We want it stopped. It can't happen, it's too dangerous, there's no safe way to do it, they have yet to develop a technology that will allow them to drill without endangering the people and our children's future," Mel Packer said.
Others want to see a moratorium on natural gas drilling in city limits until stricter regulations can catch up to the oil and gas industry.
People opposed to drilling are planning a mass march and rally at the Marcellus Shale Summit October 1 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
