Groundbreaking To Make Way For North Shore Casino

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― History is about to be made on Pittsburgh's North Shore today as officials will break ground on the city's new slots casino.  After clearing another potential roadblock yesterday, the bulldozers are finally ready to roll.

A number of dignitaries will be on hand for the 10am groundbreaking ceremony, which comes nearly one year after the State Gaming Control Board awarded Don Barden the license to build his Majestic Star Casino on the North Shore.

The plans don't come without some protest, though.

The latest potential roadblock came just yesterday when a group of architects with the Pittsburgh Civic Design Coalition asked Mayor Luke Ravenstahl to delay the groundbreaking.

They wanted to hold a public hearing about the size of the new parking garage; but the mayor denied the request.

With this morning's groundbreaking, the $450 Million project that's been  years in the making will be one step closer to reality.

The new casino is set to open in April 2009.
