Barden Wants To Postpone Part Of Casino Plan

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Developer Don Barden wants to postpone part of his ambitious plan for a slots casino on the North Shore.

His architects are asking the Pittsburgh Planning Commission to approve the delay and what they call "minor cosmetic changes."

"We're looking to make a couple of minor cosmetic adjustments to the exterior landscaping of the casino," Bob Oltmanns, a spokesperson for Barden, said. "These are changes that we made six months ago and presented to Mayor Ravenstahl and County Executive Onorato two months ago."

But the Pittsburgh Riverlife Task Force is opposed to the changes.

"The project was proposed on the basis that it would create a new waterfront accessible destination along our river fronts, that it would extend the North Shore park that's been developed over the last decade and that it would create a new connection between a growing community and the water itself," Lisa Schroeder of Riverlife Task Force said.

A public hearing on the proposed changes and delay will be held by the city planning commission in two weeks.
