Man Charged After Stealing Elderly Woman's Purse

LEECHBURG (KDKA) ― Two men are being called heroes after they tackled a man who stole an elderly woman's purse.

It happened around 12:20 p.m. Monday at the Leechburg Giant Eagle.

Police say 79-year-old Anna Marie Motillo was walking out of the store with her daughter when a man grabbed her purse and took off through the parking lot.

But he didn't get far. Two Allegheny Power workers were eating lunch nearby. They tackled Scott Caveglia in the parking lot and waited there until police arrived.

"We never encourage people to get involved in situations like this, but these guys really helped us out. They deserve to be commended," said Allegheny Township Police Chief John Fontaine.

Police say Motillo suffered an injury to her eye and her hand. She also needed about 11 stitches.

Caveglia is now charged with robbery, theft and criminal conspiracy. He told police he was stealing the purse because he wanted money to buy heroine.

Caveglia is in the Westmoreland County Jail on $10,000 straight cash bond.

Police are now looking for two more people who are being charged in this crime.
