Local Man Survives Jump From Bridge After Crash

MUDDY CREEK TWP. (KDKA/AP) ― State police rescued a motorist who  jumped into a lake after his car wrecked on an icy bridge and he saw other vehicles approaching.

Michael Wells, 48, of New Castle, crashed his vehicle into another that had already spun out on Route 422 Monday morning.

The accident happened on a bridge over Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park - about 35 miles north of Pittsburgh

As Wells and the other motorist stood and exchanged information, they saw other vehicles approaching and ran for safety.

That's when police say Wells jumped from the bridge.

He's being treated for hypothermia at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.  He's also sore.

Doctors are keeping him in the hospital overnight because he has an irregular heartbeat.
