Emotional Vigil Held For Kia Johnson

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) ― People gathered in Wilkinsburg tonight for a very special vigil remembering Kia Johnson.

Johnson's body was found last week in an apartment.

Her baby had been cut from her womb.

The vigil comes on the same day as new information was released about her baby boy's condition.

Johnson's son was released from West Penn Hospital today.

The family has named the boy Terrell Kian Johnson in honor of his mother.

Family members say the baby boy is doing well although they will not say exactly who is caring for him.

People gathered just outside the apartment building where 18 year-old Johnson's body was found.

Her hands and feet bound with duct tape, her abdomen sliced open.

"We said we need to do something to let the Johnson family know that we are concerned about the conditions and situation that happened," said Rev. Richard Payne of the Wilkinsburg Ministerium.

People at the vigil wrote messages on poster board that will be given to the Johnson family.

Led by a group of Wilkinsburg ministers, the group prayed for Kia and her family but also for the woman accused of killing her and stealing the baby Andrea Curry-Demus.

"It's hard because I think about the girl who did it, Andrea, because she was like a friend to me and I just cannot understand… no rhyme or reason for any of it," said Ivy Blunt.

Blunt lives near Curry-Demus' apartment.

She hopes this vigil will help the Johnson family during a horrendous time.

"There are things that can help give them closure and peace for Kia's family," said Blunt.

There will be a memorial service Friday morning for Kia Johnson.

That same morning a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Curry-Demus.
