Kane Patient Allegedly Abused For 6 Months

GLEN HAZEL (KDKA) ― Five nursing home workers are accused of abusing a 94-year-old patient.

According to the criminal complaint in the case, the victim suffered six months of abuse.

The five former employees have been charged with abuse and assault. Sources tell me at least one of the former employees has a prior record for assault.

For John Jacobs, Glen Hazel Kane has been wonderful.  His 87-year-old mother has been there for eight years.

"I have no complaints.  My mom has a bruise on her body they'll call me and say, 'Your mother has fallen,' or something like that.  They even ask for an aspirin or a change her medicine they'll call," Jacobs said.

Five former Kane employees are accused of physically assaulting a 94-year-old woman who suffered from dementia, Alzheimer's and used a wheelchair.

Shalaya Hatten, who has a prior arrest for assault, Karen Perry and Shelly Keene, are facing assault and neglect charges. So is Danielle Taylor. Mary Ann Bower is charged with harassment.

According to the criminal complaint, one employee stomped on the victim's foot. The suspect returned a few minutes later and struck the victim with her hand.

According to criminal complaint, a witness heard a loud slap, that the victim was struck in the head.

According to the complaint, the victim cried out, "Ouch. You're hurting me," and, "Stop hurting me."

"I think the place is an excellent care facility," John Kormosh said. He comes every day to see his wife, who like the victim in this case is also suffering from Alzheimer's.

"I've never seen any abuse at all in my two and a half years of coming here," he said.

County Executive Dan Onorato released a statement.

"The care and safety of the residents of our four Kane Regional Centers is of paramount importance. I am incensed by the alleged actions of these five individuals. Upon the initial report of possible illegal activity, we immediately suspended the five individuals without pay, and the County Police launched a full investigation. As soon as they were arrested and charged, we immediately terminated their employment. We will absolutely not tolerate any level of disrespect, neglect or mistreatment of Kane Center residents."

The director of the Kane hospitals tells KDKA the victim of the assaults is in one of the Kane hospitals and is doing well.

All five charged former employees are expected to make their first court appearances in the next two weeks.
