Community Mourns Somerset Co. Teen Killed In Crash

BOSWELL (KDKA) ― A close-knit community in Somerset County is in shock following the tragic death of a high school freshman.

The student was killed in an auto accident in Westmoreland County, near the Somerset County line. He was with a group of people traveling home Friday night from the Britney Spears concert at Mellon Arena.

North Star High School in Boswell is mourning the death of 15-year-old Johnny Blough.

"They did everything right. They went to a concert; they had a parent with them for supervision, the parent was actually driving the lead car," said North Star School Superintendent Dennis Leyman. "The car that John was riding was in the middle and that was the one that was struck from the rear."

The accident happened at a traffic signal. Authorities say Blough was a backseat passenger in a car that was rear-ended by a pick-up truck.

Officials have only identified the driver of the truck as a 24-year-old man traveling with no headlights.

On Sunday, friends and classmates placed a cross, flowers and other items at the crash scene in remembrance of Blough.

"He was so funny. He was really everyone's friend," said classmate, Katie Abramowich. "He was really easy to talk to.

"He's just a great kid, the whole family. His mother's a cheerleading adviser here. His father is on the school board. His sisters are cheerleaders," said Blough's football coach, Stacy Schmitt. "It's just devastating, for the whole community."

Schmitt says that Blough will be sorely missed.

"That freshman class he was a part of, we had about 15 of them that played football and they were the closest class I ever had coaching," he added. "They were just always doing things together."

School officials say grief counselors will be available Monday morning for the students.

Several other students were injured in the crash. Officials say one remains in the hospital.

An investigation into the crash continues.
