Copper Theft Leads To Phone Outage In Joffre

JOFFRE (KDKA) ― About 300 customers remain without home telephone service in Joffre, Washington County.

Verizon and Smith Township police say the problem is the result of thieves stealing copper from telephone wires.

At one point, as many as 500 homes didn't have landline phone service.

Frances Allison, 92, doesn't have a cell phone and relies on her home phone.

"I feel like I'm all alone without a phone because the phone is my security – that's my second person in the house," she said.

Elaine Sella realized her home phone was dead when a man who was supposed to go bear hunting with her husband neglected to call on time.

"Couldn't figure out why someone would steal a wire – how in the world they'd get up to get it," she said.

Verizon hopes to have service restored Saturday afternoon.

Officials say the theft is not a chronic problem in that part of Washington County.
