Jeannette Residents Hoping For Flood Assistance

JEANNETTE (KDKA) ― Three weeks after severe weather and damaging floods, the homeowners hardest hit by last month's storms are hoping for a helping hand as clean-up efforts continue.

The flood waters that the storms brought to most of the area have receded, but the impact is still being felt in parts of Westmoreland County.

With more than $500,000 worth of storm damage and about $50,000 worth of city funds to spend, officials say the city of Jeannette is in need of assistance.

"Our people need help," said Jeannette Mayor Michael Cafasso. "A lot of people don't have furnaces. They don't have hot-water tanks. They don't have washers or dryers, because our community is a basement-type community."

Mayor Cafasso says an unknown amount of money has been given over the past few weeks by random donors and that has helped to buy some necessary supplies like dehumidifiers.

However, the mayor says there needs to be more transparency and organization with the donations along with someĀ federal assistance to get the city back on its feet.

"We need to get these folks in town. We need to get them back in living conditions, where they can cook a meal, where they can take a bath in their own home, to get their homes back to where they were prior to this," says Mayor Cafasso.

He says that Jeannette is just waiting to have federal aid sent their way.
